Students will be given opportunities to engage with teachers and classmates through live instruction, question and answer periods with teachers and group work (i.e., synchronous learning). All instruction will continue to be aligned to the New York State Learning Standards. Instruction will focus on “core” subject areas; however, elective courses will continue to be offered in a remote learning environment. While the District will utilize some common main software features (Google Meet, Schoology, Google Classroom, etc.), if individual phone conversations are required to enhance/reach instructional targets, such tools will be used at the discretion of the teacher. The District also has the capability to set up free remote wireless access via our parking lots and satellite fields, should families not have the ability to access WiFi at home or via another public WiFi entity (i.e.- the public library).

A. Notification and Activation (Internal and External Communications) Communication Systems

The District Wide Plan is responsive to the needs of all schools/buildings within the district and is consistent with the more detailed Emergency Response Plans required at the building level. Each group within the building will be represented to include a teacher, a custodian, a nurse, a physical education teacher, a building level PBTA representative, a resource officer (as available), a support staff member, and a community member. The Health and Safety Committee will also communicate the district safety plan to the building leadership teams (BLTs), monitor and coordinate the health and safety plans of the BLTs, and address health and safety issues identified by the BLTs. When the superintendent is alerted to a situation, each staff member in their office is assigned a school building to notify by phone, cellular, or pager with specific instructions according to level of emergency. The district-wide plan was adopted by the school board after at least one public hearing that provided for the participation of school personnel, parents, students and any other interested parties.

Parents are provided a mandatory questionnaire through our Student Information System at the beginning of each year with a series of district information questions that include the level of Access students have to computing devices and Internet access at their place of residence. It is also preferable to have teachers and student support staff provide instruction from their classrooms. The District supports the school buildings by deploying district resources that support the Emergency Response Teams and the Post-Incident Response Teams in the affected school(s).

For teachers and students in grades 6-12, we use the current in-person bell schedule and A/B-day rotation. Based on the learning model we have developed, K-5 teachers and students follow the same schedule that we currently run in-person. Teachers and related service providers share their Classroom link with students. Teachers and Administrators are surveyed during the year and anyone who requires Internet Access at their place of residence will be provided an Internet Hotspot to provide remote instruction.

This toolkit provides strategies K-12 institutions can use to implement and enhance safety reporting programs and encourage bystander reporting among students and school community members. School personnel can use these resources, programs, and tools to develop an actionable and comprehensive school safety plan tailored to their specific circumstances. Drills may inadvertently prompt a negative emotional or psychological response in staff or students because of previous exposure(s) to trauma. Four additional drills must be held in each school year during the hours after sunset and before sunrise in school buildings in which students are provided with sleeping accommodations. School districts continue to be required to notify the Commissioner of Education of these school building closures (except for routine snow emergency days).
